Hey, I'm De'Nasia. I am a senior in high school and I want to become a Clinical Psychologist. I also took a college class for psychology 101 in my junior year of high school. #high-school #psychology #therapy

It is VERY difficult to get an internship shadowing a psychologist, even when you are an undergraduate psychology major here in the USA (obviously, I cannot speak to the protocol and cultural practices in other nations). The reason is this: we have ethical standards in therapeutic settings (which is what clinical psychologists are involved with) which require the written consent of the patient for a student to listen/watch what is going on during the therapy session. Most licensed practitioners would not be comfortable asking their clients for an untrained and unschooled young person to sit in and hear/watch a therapeutic session. Client confidentiality is of utmost importance for the healing process to work.

Now, there are research opportunities to work with professors while an undergraduate students at university. There are many ways to learn and grow by being a research assistant to a clinical psychologist at university>

In graduate school, i.e., doctoral programs in clinical psychology, an internship is required and occurs during the fifth year of the program.

Hi DeNasia!

Psychologist have a lot of field in the work place you can go clinical, forensic, organizational, etc.
If you`re looking for a clinical internship you should look up for hospitals in your city, mental health care institutions and be aware when they might look for an intern.

You can go any place where psychologists work and ask them for an internship! Most will allow you to shadow them because that’s what they had to do to get where they are.

Unfortunately because of covid-19 internships are not currently happening in most places. I would definitely speak with the college counselor at your school in regards to making/establishing contacts.
