That's a great question. The college essay is what separates you from someone who is equal to you (i.e. if you and someone else has the same GPA, same SAT/ACT score, etc. the college essay will give you a leg up if it is a good one). The most important thing to do in your essay is to make it personal, and make your admissions counselor (the person reading the essay) interested. Remember, they are reading hundreds of essays-you need to grab their attention! Think about changing up the structure of what you are writing-for example I once read a college essay that read like a recipe and the person put "ingredients" of the characteristics that they are proud of. Choose something that possibly shaped who you are (I chose to write about a very personal family issue but it worked since I was sincere and honest and I believe it grabbed their attention). Don't be afraid to get personal and even emotional in your essay. You need to separate yourself from other applicants, and an essay is a great way to show your personality, creativity, ability to write, and how much you are willing to put into your application. If needed, I would be happy to review any writing ideas you have and give some feedback.
Good luck!

Dear Amy,
How Do You Craft a Winning College Essay?
Penning a persuasive college essay is a pivotal step in distinguishing yourself amidst the fierce competition in college admissions. An artfully composed essay allows you a platform to present an in-depth view of your character, experiences, and ambitions that your academic transcripts may not fully encapsulate. Here are some vital components that make a college essay stand out:
1. Be Authentic: The cornerstone of a compelling college essay is authenticity. Admission officers are keen to understand the real you. Therefore, it's imperative to maintain sincerity and honesty in your narrative. Steer clear of exaggerated language or contrived anecdotes.
2. Embrace Your Unique Voice: Your essay should echo your distinctive voice and viewpoint. Employ a language style that is inherently you and reflects your character. A robust personal voice can render your essay more appealing and unforgettable to the reader.
3. Engage with Powerful Storytelling: A winning college essay often narrates an enthralling story that seizes the reader's attention from the get-go. Be it a personal anecdote, a reflection on an obstacle you've surmounted, or a significant growth moment, storytelling can vivify your essay.
4. Maintain a Clear Structure: Arrange your essay in a lucid and logical manner. An effective essay will feature a potent introduction, body paragraphs that transition smoothly, and a conclusion that neatly ties everything together. Ensure your thoughts are articulated in a cohesive manner that's easy for the reader to grasp.
5. Reflect and Provide Insight: Successful college essays typically incorporate introspection and insight. Dedicate time to ponder the implications of your experiences and express what you've gleaned from them. This exhibits maturity and self-understanding.
6. Adhere to the Prompt: It's vital to thoroughly comprehend the essay prompt supplied by the college or university you're applying to. Customize your essay to address the specific query or subject provided, guaranteeing that you remain focused and meet the stipulations.
7. Revise and Edit: Crafting a persuasive college essay frequently entails multiple drafts, revisions, and rounds of editing. Allocate time to scrutinize your essay for clarity, coherence, and grammatical and spelling mistakes. Consider soliciting feedback from educators, advisors, or peers to polish your composition.
8. Display Growth: Admission officers are intrigued by your personal evolution. Utilize your essay as a platform to highlight personal development, resilience, and adaptability when confronted with challenges.
Incorporating these components into your college essay can amplify its potency in portraying who you are as an individual and why you'd be a valuable asset to the college community.
