I didn't have a shining talent either. I was, however, persistent and studied hard at something that I felt passionate about (Computer Science). I think I struggled more than most because I wasn't a math genius, but in the end, I discovered that I was pretty good at solving complex problems.

A shining talent huh? I have to say that I'm not really sure what that is. But I bet that you are really good at things...maybe writing, maybe thinking creatively, making asking great questions and using good advice. It has been my experience that colleges/universities do hope to do many things including bringing in the best and brightest students they can find...even if that means that student at first, shows potential for doing great things and maybe doesn't actually have "shininess" at the start of their college journey. :)
Successful college admissions offices recognize that based on the average age for starting college, somewhere between 18 and 19, these are young people who are still growing and learning. They are vibrant thinkers and have much to contribute whether they are star athletes, strong in math or make great music. They all come with something they can contribute.
As best as you can, focus on getting the best grades you can while in high school and college. I imagine that others will be in a position to find your shining talent, sometimes even before you realize it ;) Best of luck to you!
