Careers that have a combiation of computer programming and humanitarian elements?

I am majoring in computer science and have always wanted to engage in doing humanitarian work. I was wondering if there are any careers that would involve both of these? Thank you #computer-science #humanitarian

Hi Mirna,

The biggest social problems from human rights to health to education to climate change need computer scientists. These days technology is at the center of most work. This is true too of humanitarian careers. If you are interested in international development, the largest aid agencies in the world now run innovations labs where they recruit top CS majors to build solutions to solve global issues. Check out UNICEF, CARE, and The Red Cross. If you are interested in working with tech startups that do humanitarian work, check out the Fast Forward Directory of Tech Nonprofits (http://www.ffwd.org/tech-nonprofits/). It's a database of the world's tech nonprofits. Every organization listed needs talented programers. First, start at your school. Many CS programs have "tech for good" internships. If your school doesn't have one, the organizations in the directory are always looking for interns.

Thank you for this question. Thank you for leveraging coding super powers for good.

Hi Mirna, I would say once you get your degree in Computer Science, it will open up many doors for work in many different fields including humanitarian work. I would focus on doing well in your studies and then you can apply for any number of jobs related to what you're interested in!

My interests in college were programming and biology. I wanted to work on impactful products that help people but use software to do it. Guess what? My first job out of college was working for a medical device company and I worked on medical products that would go on to help others using programming. That's just one field to consider.

There are software jobs for non-profits, civic duties, medical, education, etc...
