I have a master's in sport management. For that career, this degree will best suit you. Plus you can add a concentration or a minor in journalism or communication to better position yourself toward media. Maybe you can end up being a sports anchor!

1) Get specific about the industry you'd like to start with. If its sports, surround yourself with sports media. If its fashion, likewise. Once you've established a career, if you'd like to pivot to another arena, you can do so. Many people that start in sports eventually end up in news, and then back again. The key in the beginning is to choose something you're extremely passionate about.
2) Once you've chosen the industry, get some training in media, journalism, communications, marketing, etc. All of these can help give you a foundation of knowledge to build upon. This can be at major universities or colleges but doesn't have to be. There are plenty of industry specific programs out there that often have some type of job placement services as well.
3) Get experience! In any way possible. Find someone that is doing what you'd like to be doing and ask them to be a mentor. Sign up for internships or an apprenticeship. Volunteer to do any work possible to get your foot in the door.
4) Sacrifice. Be willing to work whenever, wherever, and however to place yourself in the industry. And when you're there, soak it all up. Learn everything you can. Ask tons of questions. Educate yourself with real world experience with the people that can will eventually advance your career.
I hope this helps! Best wishes and good luck!

Put yourself out there!
Ask Newspapers, broadcasters, Radio Stations can you gain experience by doing an internship. It will be hard at the beginning especially if this is unpaid, but this is the best way to get your name out there & a way to increase your social media following.
From here you can gain exposure and grow from strength to strength in this area

Hi Reiden! I would say the two biggest skills you'll need for any type of career in social media are consistency and confidence. A career in social media can be really lucrative and rewarding, but it doesn't happen over night. I would recommend taking these few steps as soon as you feel ready:
1. Determine the type of page you want to create (i.e. Sports) - this can be high level, but just the general realm where you want your page to live
2. Think through your goals for the page - what type of content do you want to be sharing? Will this be full time or part time for you? How much do you want your page to grow? In what time frame? Questions like that will help direct you in your business!
3. Just start! It can seem daunting to start something new like this. There are so many factors to consider, it can be hard to know where to start. Once you've done steps 1 and 2, don't hesitate to dive in! You can work out all of the specifics as you go.
4. Be consistent. It will take time for you to see the results that you want, but don't let that deter you. Stick to your plan with your goals in mind and don't stop until you see the results you're looking for.
Good luck!

Pursuing studies in journalism or communications is a good start. Additionally, start a social media account on Instagram and Twitter to discuss sports or create a highlights page. You could also create a YouTube channel and provide your own unique take on the hot topics in sports.
I've seen highlights and sports memes page get very popular on Instagram. You can consider doing something similar with adding entertainment/humor, but be sure to include an interesting comment.
Good luck!

There are many paths you can take to finding a career in sports media. For me personally, I didn't even know I wanted to pursue this as a career until after I graduated college, at which point I took a one-year sports journalism program, found an internship, and then spent months working on my craft (writing) and networking until I finally found an entry-level opportunity at a sports network. But a lot has changed since then (2010). With the advent of social media, you have the ability to build up your own brand and market yourself to potential employers. There are also so many ways to work on your skills and build a "resume" without formal experience or training. Whether you're interested in writing, being on-camera, video editing, podcasting, graphic design, social media or all of the above (the more tools the better), you can find free or relatively cheap ways to sharpen your skills and build your portfolio. Taking the traditional route and enrolling in a journalism program is still a great option, but don't be discouraged if that doesn't work out. Just keep putting in the practice everyday so that you will be ready when an opportunity presents itself.
