When should you start looking for a summer internship and are non paid internships worth the time?

I am a rising sophomore in college and I want to do an internship next summer. I want to know when companies start posting internships opportunities so I don't fall behind other applicants. Also, is it worth doing non-paid internships? #internships

Hi Mariko –
Some companies post internships year-round, so anytime is good time to look. If you have some specific companies in mind, don’t hesitate to call their HR departments and ask them if they offer internships and when they are open to accepting applications. Most are very forthcoming with this information.
Unpaid internships are absolutely worth it! When I was a senior in college I took an unpaid internship for the fall semester. When the semester was ending they asked me to stay for the Spring. I said unfortunately I would need to leave to find a paying job, so they offered to pay me for the Spring semester. When I graduated, they offered me a paying position. Proof positive that hard-work pays off. If you do get an unpaid internship, still take it seriously and don’t slack-off because it’s unpaid. The work experience you get is immeasurable. Apply yourself 110% and maintain a positive attitude. If you don’t want to stay with that company or if they don’t have an opportunity to hire you later, you might at least be able to get a letter of recommendation and good work references which you will need when interviewing for jobs.
Good luck!

All internships count. If the job description entices you to go for it, you should. If you have other offers, compare them. No experience is small, not all paid experiences are best. Research the companies and see which sector you’re interested in more.
