When having responsibilities both at home and at a full time job, how do you balance them to make the best of both?

I am asking this because as a full time student I have responsibilities that require my attention both at home and at school, and it has proven difficult to balance them both. #organization #work-life-balance #work-ethic

Frederic’s Answer

For me, achieving work-life balance is all about efficiency, and one way to do this is to keep an impeccable calendar. Beyond the customer meetings and conference calls on my schedule, I also block off time for catching up on the news, family dinners, reading to my kids before bed and my weekly hockey games with the local rec league. I also make a point to take advantage of my commuting time: I schedule calls when I’m driving. And when I take public transportation, I crank through emails and read the morning and evening news on my phone.

When balancing life at home and full-time classes or a full-time job, you're going to have to make sacrifices, no matter how well you calendar or take advantage of your commute. Accept that you can't be everywhere, so you can be present where you are.

Simeon’s Answer

Try to figure out what your goals are in terms of grades and the essential things that you need to do at home. One of the best things you'll be able to do for yourself is learning to say "no" to things that are not a high priority. Don't forget to include fun and self-care on the list of priorities, but realize their is a difference between genuinely enjoying yourself and burning time on TV or social media.

Great question Meghann. Balancing work and home never gets easier so its great that you're thinking about it so early in your career. Besides staying organized in both areas which will make going back and forth easier, sometimes you do have to choose. Be sure you know the 1-3 most important things you want out of each side of your life, focus on those, and let the rest go. Lots of things seem important. Choose the ones you'll remember in 5 years and spend your energy there.

Paola’s Answer

Make sure you prioritize. Make good use of time management. I make lists and stick to lists so that I get the most important tasks done for the day so that I can spend time at home. Do not put too much stress on yourself. You can do it!

Dana’s Answer

Great question! This can always be stressful. I believe you should have a career that you enjoy, but it isn’t the the only think that fulfills me. When I am done with work for the day, I devote my time to my family which is what really makes me happy. Some days are still a juggling act, but most of the time I can balance it. I also think it is important to find a company that allows you to make your life a priority. I have worked for companies before where that was not the case, and it was a very stressful time. Good luck!

Julie’s Answer

for me, I have to learn that during the day, I devote my time to work. This is my full time job. If I didn't have this, my family wouldn't have the income to give my children the things that they want- not need, but want. When I am done work, I am done. I have to give them my attention because during the day, they are at school, away from me. My best advice would be to separate the 2.
