Hello Dakota!

When first reflecting on your question about entertainment and tourism, I combined them as in: I work at a world class theme park (tourism), and have friends in entertainment who are street performers, musicians at different venues, etc. Echoing both previous answers, hospitality and entertainment are very broad fields-- you could work for a restaurant (hospitality) as well as be a museum curator who gives tours to guests.

Hi Dakota!

Great question. The short answer is, it can mean a wide variety of things.

Tourism by definition refers to points of interest in any particular place. Entertainment means to bring about amusement. I think it's also worth noting that these can both exist individually or co-exist. For the sake of your question, we'll assume they co-exist.

Careers that combine the two could range from anything like being a stage actor, to being a singer in a band, to being a horse-and-carriage tour guide.

For example, I mentioned a horse-and-carriage tour guide. A person with a job like that works to educate people/tourists about the history of particular places and points of interest and how all the events past have paved the way to present day life and culture (tourism). If they were boring and unamusing, who would want to go on their tour? To be successful, they need to be amusing, fun, make people laugh, or be a great storyteller that keeps you "on the edge of your seat" during the tour - that's the entertainment part!

Career-wise it could be any number of jobs. At the end of the day, a career in entertainment and tourism is something that both educates people on points of interest in any given place, while providing amusement and enjoyment.

Best to you!

Dakota,

This is a good question! It's a very broad field, and, within that field, there are many occupations.
1. Let's say you are working on a cruise ship. You could be part of the programs and activities, or food service, or the people who load the ship or those handling the ship's maintenance - all are in the field. Although some are a bit removed, they are all vital to the mission.

2. Let's say you work at a hotel in a destination city, like San Antonio. A large group wants to hold a convention, and wants to use your hotel. First someone has to put together prices and bid on the convention. . . maybe they will go elsewhere! If you get it, then there is setting up the various rooms, making sure everything is perfect - from tablecloths to temperature control. You need to provide the visitors with sight seeing information, handle any problems, etc. Or, you could be working in the office, handling finances, or hotel maintenance, or even the hotel warehouse - ordering and receiving supplies, etc.

3. Entertainment? you could be a performer, a manager, the person setting up the sound system or the pyrotechnics, the person who books the travel arrangements, etc.

I know there are lots of things I left out, but, basically, I want to convey that there are many people behind the scenes who make these types of performances a success, and they are all just as much a part of it as the ones who get all the attention!

Hope this helps!
Kim
