I want to be a police officer. How do I know when people are doing bad things?

I'm Ms. Balint at the International Community School. My 2nd graders have a few questions and I'd like to share your advice with them. Thanks in advance!

It is great that you want to be a police officer. Our world need lots of police officers to protect us. Work hard in school, get good grades and study hard. You work hard through school and I know there will be a Police Department that will be very happy to hire you as a police officer.

Michael’s Answer

Before you can become a police officer, you will go through extensive training about the various aspects of the law which will help you determine if people are doing something bad. Sometimes, you might observe someone doing something bad while you are on your patrol or you can find out from other people about people doing bad things in their neighborhood that you and your fellow officers can investigate later.

There are also many different fields of law which range from protecting neighborhoods, parks, ports, borders, etc. so if there is a certain area of law you are passionate about trying to uphold, there are plenty of opportunities for you to follow your dream.

Whatever you decide to pursue, always be safe and know that you will be making a big difference in your neighborhood or country. Thanks in advance for all you will accomplish!
