When I grow up, I want to be a zoologist, but I want to stay inside US - specifically, in or near Atlanta. Once I get a zoology degree, what are some good places to work near my home? P.S. I want to work with mammals.
Hi! I'm Ms. Eldridge at the International Community School. My 5th graders have a few questions and I'd like to share your advice with them. Thanks in advance!

Hello,
As a Zoology major myself, I can understand that finding a job after college may be a bit challenging or daunting since a Zoology major on the surface seems like a major with a small amount of career choices. However, a zoologist can work in many different areas! Zoos, aquariums, wildlife centers, research laboratories, wildlife parks, teaching, federal government agencies such as the US fish and wildlife services, etc. I'm going to assume you are not about to graduate college with a Zoology degree yet, so I would say not to worry about it too much until college. But, if you would like, you could research jobs at your local zoos, aquariums, etc and see what the jobs require, what the workload is like, and which you might prefer the most.
Once you get into college, you'll have a wide range of zoology advisors and professors who can also help you determine possible job opportunities around your area.
I also agree with Andrea's answer about volunteering! This will not only give you hands on experience but also help you add stuff to your college applications, which is a big plus! You could volunteer at your local zoo, aquarium, humane society, vet hospitals, basically anywhere where there are animals involved.
I'm not from Georgia or Atlanta, so I don't know the area and can't give you specific names of places, but I hope this helped either way!

Atlanta has a great zoo and also an Aquarium. You may want to see about volunteering at one of these places and see what the work is like.
Volunteer over the summer at the Atlanta Zoo.
