Is being a lawyer fun, and is it hard to be a lawyer?

Hi! I'm Ms. Lambert at the International Community School. My 4th graders have a few questions and I'd like to share your advice with them. Thanks in advance!

Latifa’s Answer

Yes, being a lawyer can be fun. But you should be careful deciding in what area you want to practice. Do you want to read contracts and work in a big corporation? Or maybe you want to put criminals in jail, or defend people who were accused of crimes. There are so many areas of law. It is like being a doctor where you can decide to concentrate on the feet, stomach, lungs, or the brain. Also, you might want to do legal internships first to decide if that is something you might like.

Great question! Being a lawyer can be lots of fun, but it can also be very hard work. Just because it is hard work, however, doesn't mean it's impossible...it just means it can be challenging and challenging can be a good thing because it keeps us thinking and growing!!! Lawyers can have a variety of jobs too! Some lawyers work in law firms and may spend many days in the court room; some lawyers are never in a court room and instead are drafting or reviewing documents or are in client meetings or negotiations. Some lawyers are trained as lawyers but can also have other jobs where their legal education helps them. For instance, lawyers can be professors, business men and women, entrepreneur, inventors, new anchors, writers, detectives, FBI, CIA, Presidents of the United States(!), Senators, mayors, or bankers. I am a lawyer, but I work for a very large company that focuses on technology...my day consists of many meetings, business guidance, helping my clients solve problems, working on large projects, writing or interpreting company policies, interpreting laws, developing trainings, as well as reviewing or negotiating contracts. It is challenging, but because I am not sure what I will be working on each day and always need to learn about new technologies, it is also exciting and never boring!!!

Is it fun being a lawyer? For some people yes but you have to know what is required or have to put up with it.
I worked in a software business and was involved in many contract negotiations with lawyers.
1) Are you ready to read lots of documents and grasp/understand what is it that you have to use to make your argument.
2) You have to deal with long negotiations between the two or more lawyers and find a common ground. At times, lawyers are most difficult to find common ground.
3) All the preparation and reading done to prepare for the case is of no value if a judge has already made up his/her mind. This is difficult to absorb but it is a reality to accept that one person(judge) has tremendous power and leverage. I was involved in a case and the Judge made an arbitrary decision without listening to the lawyer.
4) Being a lawyer, you can be a politician, or judge or corp counsel or have your own practice.
5) Are you willing to defend a person who you know is guilty. You have to leave behind moral values/ethics. Is it fun for some people? You decide.
Is it fun to become a lawyer it depends upon who you ask but overall consensus towards lawyers is that there is a stigma towards lawyers.

Being a lawyer is fun because it is challenging. There are many different types of lawyers and many areas of law. But regardless of what type of law you practice, your clients are relying on you to help them understand what laws apply to a situation and to help them solve a problem. And since technology, laws, and the marketplace are always changing, it is never boring! One thing I like a lot about being a corporate lawyer at a tech company is that I get to work on projects with team members with different areas of expertise -- for example, engineers, sales/marketing professional, public policy experts, etc. It is very fun and satisfying to work as a team to launch new products and services that can change the ways that people play, work and live.
