How long did it take you to become an artist? What was your first drawing?

Hello! I'm Ms. Tingle at the International Community School. My 5th graders have a few questions and I'd like to share your advice with them. Thanks so much!

The desire to be an artist is the beginning of the process. You just need to keep practicing and having fun with your art. After a while, you'll notice that you are getting better and will be able to explore different projects and opportunities. If you have a favorite artist, google them and see how they started creating art which might be a source of inspiration for you. Make sure to keep creating, even when you don't want to, as you might be pleasantly surprised with the results.

If you want to be an artist, you are already halfway there! There are so many different ways for you to be an artist so don't be discouraged if it takes you a while to figure out what your best at and what you enjoy. For instance, you can work with pencils, paints, markers, photography, clay or so many other types of materials. Never get discouraged if something doesn't quite work out the way you'd like because sometimes it takes artists days, months or even years to finish their works of arts! Art is a way to express yourself so don't feel like you need to follow someone's else's style. You will certainly find artists who will inspire you; however, bring your own style to your work. Remember, there is only one you in this world and only you can see things they way you want to express them!

I can't remember my first picture but I do remember always drawing pictures of the ocean. I LOVE sharks and other marine life so that was always my passion to draw sharks and other sea creatures. I can't wait to see your work some day!

I have 2 friends that are artists. They paint, color, draw, etc. they practiced a lot and did it because they have alot of fun with it. They post their work on Instagram or any social media to publicize their work and potentially sell them for people to hang in their houses and such. You're already an artist when you put the paint on the canvas.
