This is a great question! Finance is a business discipline that requires some formal education, i.e. it cannot be learned via a basic "on the job training" experience (like Marketing or Sales Operations, for example).
Setting the level of degree aside for the moment (i.e. MBA, Undergraduate, etc.), financial education involves application of statistics and calculus to determine results. The good news is that they can be learned with training and discipline. I had no formal business education until I earned my MBA.
Here are some "building blocks" that are an important part of one's financial education:
Basics of Accounting
Fundamentals of Finance
Statistics
Economics (Micro and Macro)
