What Types of Translating Opportunities are Offered to Teens?

I'd like to take advantage of the fact that I'm bilingual to volunteer virtually during the pandemic, but most of the opportunities I come across are specifically for people over the age of 18.

Hi Amanda,

I found a few opportunities on VolunteerMatch that do not have an age requirement. For example:
* https://www.volunteermatch.org/search/opp3232311.jsp
* https://www.volunteermatch.org/search/opp3299449.jsp
* https://www.volunteermatch.org/search/opp3340758.jsp

I hope you can use VolunteerMatch or similar sites to find ways to give back to the community. I think it's wonderful that you're looking to help. :)

Hi Amanda!

I love your passion to want to use your super power of speaking a second language. I would suggest you look for your local foodbank and women's shelter to assist where you can. I would also just remind you to keep a running journal of every impact you are making while speaking in both languages and reflect this on your resume. The abililty to speak a second language is a great advantage in volunteer and your professional opportunities and pay scale.
Best of Luck !

Hi Amanda!

You might consider reaching out to senior homes or senior centers to see if they have any bilingual patients who would like someone friendly to chat with or exchange letters with. Many seniors are lonely, especially during COVID-19 while traveling and visitation might be limited. It may feel awkward to call and reach out but many caregivers would love to have extra folks interacting with the seniors who may not get a lot of social interaction. Even 30 min phone calls every now and then or the occasional letter with a pen pal would definitely brighten their day! Just an idea, I hope you're able to find something, it's great you want to use your language skills to give back! Good luck!

Hi Amanda,

I love that you want to use your language skills to help others. I'm not certain of the age limits for these programs, but here are some other organizations to explore:

Tarjmily - Provide on-demand language access to refugees and people in need of humanitarian assistance.

TED Translators - Add subtitles to TED Talks and enable the inspiring ideas in them to crisscross languages and borders.

Translators Without Borders - Those fluent in more than one language can provide translations to international organizations that focus on crisis relief, health and education.
