Rekha’s Answer

To get into indian cricket Team..

You play club /school cricket when you are in your early teens, get noticed in the local leagues & tournaments and get selected for your District Under 13 team. after which all the districts play and then the state team is selected from the district teams. Once you make it to under 13 state team, you just maintain your form and proceed to under 16 and then to under 19. The state teams play each other and then the Indian under 19 team is selected. All this works when you put lot of efforts and perform well.

Sundar’s Answer

Ravi, glad to know that you are a cricket enthusiast. If you are already playing cricket at your age-group or school level you have a good start.

Below are the options:
You can play School cricket (represent your school), participate in inter-school tournaments and in zonal tournaments.
In Zonal cricket, they will always be selectors for the districts and state team. You will have to put up good performances and show all round skills to be selected for the district and state team.

From their on, you need to repeat the process in different stages, district --> state --> age-group cricket (under-15, under-16, under-17).
From Under-19 onwards, we do have options at national level and then go on to represent your state in Ranji Trophy.

Recently, there are also lucrative and attractive shorter formats like IPL, Big bash etc - which gives you opportunity to shine and make a name for yourself.

I have played cricket at my school level, district and zone level. I continued my interests after joining my company and various leagues at multiple divisions.

Happy playing. Follow your heart.

First place to start is to join a good Cricket Academy and start practising. They do arrange a lot of age group cricket, hence it is crucial to start competing in these tournaments at a younger age. Once you get noticed in these tournaments then the road becomes a lot clearer.

Note: The competition in cricket in India is very high. Hence, you should always have alternate career path in mind.

Hi Ravi,

You play club /school cricket when you are in your early teens, get noticed in the local leagues & tournaments and get selected for your District Under 13 team. after which all the districts play and then the state team is selected from the district teams. Once you make it to under 13 state team, you just maintain your form and proceed to under 16 and then to under 19. The state teams play each other and then the Indian under 19 team is selected. After this it is usually a mixture of luck, timing, form, vacancies which lead you to the main Indian team.

The players who don't get selected to the state / Indian age group teams play professional league cricket in their states. It consists of several divisions, leading to the 1st division. Where all the top players in the state play and get paid well. The open state team is usually selected from these leagues where if you perform well, you can earn well & also get selected to the state team and then play state matches like Ranji trophy, Vijay hazare etc. After this it is again a mixture of luck, timing, form, vacancies which lead you to the main Indian team.

The traditional way stated above usually starts in your early teens and can take you on an average 10 years or more.
