For many people, becoming a retail associate is fairly easy, and is often the first employment to be obtained during/out of high school. Do your research to create a simple job resume and prepare for job interview questions (to ask and to be asked), and fill out job applications at every store you are willing to give employment a try. There usually isn't too many extra qualifications to just get your foot on the first rung of the retail associate employment ladder. If you are wanting ways to help yourself prepare, you can prepare for interacting with customers all day (so polish your social skills), prepare to handle payment methods (learn how to handle cash, checks, cards appropriately), study job postings for retail associate jobs and think through how you will work to fulfill each detail listed in the job posting, so you can and will quickly become a valued employee to the company.

Retail associate jobs are an excellent way to hone your interpersonal skills, and to determine the types of careers you are interested in pursuing, especially if sales is of interest. The best "experience" is to be positive, and to demonstrate that you are comfortable engaging individuals and can quickly position yourself as someone who can help them with any questions or needs as they shop. It is important to be organized as there is a constant need to replace items, hang them, store them, etc. You should work on gaining a general knowledge of what is sold in the business and you should have fundamental math and computer skills. When interviewing for a job, list any experience (volunteer or from previous jobs) where you have interacted with individuals, where you have be entrusted to manage any form of the financials, and be prepared with questions about that specific location and type of retail to demonstrate your interest.
