Hey Ava!

I just answered your music marketing question, so figured I'd hit this one too:) Being an A+R director used to mean working in the business of artist development. Nowadays, artist development is not a thing. Artists simply have to build their images and followings on their own (until the point where they get noticed by a label and have a big enough following to back up the risk the label is taking by signing them). Now, A+R more so pertains to arranging which songwriters are to write with which artists, which writers should write with which writers, or perhaps, pitching songs/ demos written by other writers to artists in attempts of getting them cut (recorded).

Best of luck,
Alyssa

Hi Ava! A&R directors are in charge of the A&R department at a record label or music publisher. During their day, they will usually take phone calls and meetings with their signed artists, listen to music sent in by up and coming artists to see who they should sign next, and help manage artist projects. They will also attend shows to watch new acts perform live before signing the artist. To become an A&R, apply for internships in the music industry and start to meet people at companies that you are interested in working in. The music industry is all about who you know so once you have those connections, those people can help you get jobs and jumpstart your career as an A&R.
