Congratulations on getting your grades up! Working or volunteering during the summer is a good start. If you’re able to get exposure to a variety of populations during high school and college, that might help you figure out your professional direction. Special Olympics volunteer, summer camp counselor, hospital volunteer, nursing home food runner, etc. Good luck!

I am not familiar with the career path for psychology and social work in Canada, but I would recommend getting started early on developing some of the skills like active listening. There are some great books on the topic and you could try volunteering at a hospital and practicing empathetic and non-directive listening.

Hi Sara,

While I'm not 100% sure about the process to become licensed in Canada, here is a website that may be able to help you out:

https://cpa.ca/students/career/becomingapsychologist/

In addition, as someone formerly planning on becoming a psychologist in the US, I can give you a bit of advice. I think what you're doing now with trying to get your grades up is great! Keep it up! The first step is going to be to get an undergraduate degree in psychology, so setting yourself up for success in college admissions is so important. In addition, maybe finding some volunteer or work opportunities related to psychology (volunteering with individuals with mental health concerns, working at a memory care unit of a retirement home, etc.) could be useful as well (and will look great for college admissions). Best of luck!
