I had my own firm for a period of time. It was incredibly exciting and liberating to embark on my own after working inhouse and at several firms. I enjoyed choosing the matters I took on and expanding into new areas of law. I had the good fortune of having a network of business professionals I could retain for marketing, accounting and other operational matters, which made running a business manageable. I found the whole experience very rewarding.

I started my own law firm 3 years ago, and I'm the only person. I like having the control over the hours I work and the clients I accept, but I also have to make sure I am focused on my business- marketing, accounting, client generation, etc. It can be very emotionally and mentally draining and fulfilling. I would suggest that you work for a law firm to get some how-to training- how do you get new clients? How do you track and bill hours and collect fees? How do you engage or disengage clients? I would also recommend having savings to be able to invest in things like a website, business cards, computer/printer/scanner/subscriptions to services and of course some money to live on while you are growing your practice. I'm glad I did it, but it took a lot of effort and planning, as well as patience.
