It can be. Like with any extracurricular commitment, be it sports, the arts, or a job, you have to balance your time well between school and the activity. Keep in mind that not all jobs require the same hours; perhaps if you decide you do want to work, you can start with a relatively low number of hours and see how it goes.

You might feel at first like you're falling behind, just because you don't have as much time as you're used to. But you can make it work by prioritizing your time. For example, think about whether you'd rather work (and make some money, or get experience, or whatever your motivation is) or have that extra hour/few hours a day to hang out with friends or watch TV or play video games. Maybe you can be more productive in your free time at school to get work done, and then homework won't take as long after school.

Thank you comment icon it is hard. Jenn is right, it's like any extracurricular commitment. I used to find myself overwhelmed in being involved in city organizing groups, volleyball in the fall, and lacrosse in the spring . It wasn't until sophomore year that I learned to balance that. I had to give up lacrosse when I entered junior year because I knew I had to start saving up for college. I got a job in the middle of my senior year- not saying it will be easy or that it will work out like this for you, but this is what happened with me. You can do what you love while still doing what you have to do (in school and work). Just have a positive mindset and prioritize :) Good Luck! :-D Jazmine

You may be able to find a job on campus which will give you the best of both worlds. Campus employers are more likely to schedule your work hours around your classes, be flexible during finals, and are closed during breaks and holidays. While an undergrad, I worked in the University's ID office and was often able to do homework while at work. Although this is not always the case, it does help with time management.

This will depend person to person as some students are really good with time management and will be handle their school work and also work part time whereas others may not be able to do so. Talk to a guidance counselor, parents and even the job itself to see what kind of work hours they require and time commitment they require before making any decisions. A job in high school is great (speaking for experience) as it will teach you many skills such as time management, commitment, and responsibility. These skills will ultimately help you when you move on and go to college and are a step ahead of others.

Hi Melissa:

You've received some great comments from the CV Professionals. Without repeating, I'd like to add that I'm going through this right now in COLLEGE with my niece. She's involved in extracurricular activities and has a part-time job. Her Mom wants her to focus on her studies rather than her job. She love her job but, gave it up. It does help with the stress level when you have a target focus (your studies). Best of luck to you!

If you don't mind the overall stress level of having to balance work and school, it's a worthwhile investment of your time. You can begin to develop a taste for what you do and don't like in a workplace setting, build up some cash to spend, and learn some basic workplace communication and behavior skills. If you are looking for work to do during the summer, I'd recommend checking out summer camp work. You can have a lot of fun during the summer, meet new people, and get some certifications for lifeguarding and ropes course work that you could use during the school year as well. Don't sacrifice your grades for work; you can work very few hours and still be able to list it on your resume as experience. How many hours a week you work shouldn't come up during an interview.

Thank you for your question. This question is more on time management.
Below are my suggestions :
1. Identify a time management tool, e.g. Phone Calendar, Microsoft Outlook, etc.
2. Put in your school time first.
3. Assign the time for doing assignment, revision, projects, etc.
4. You may find some spare you can do part time work.
5. Keep some time for your leisure, friends & family gathering, etc.
Having said that, you should make sure you assign sufficient time for your school work. This is a priority now as being as student. You can consider to do part time work with flexible working hours. Also, sufficient rest is important.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!
