Pay is usually based on geographical location/costing of living/educational and skill level required for the job you are wanting to be employed. For example, a job in New York City, pay would be hirer than the same job in Indiana.
A good way to check the position you would like to be hired pay ranges for your area is to go to Glassdoor.com and review pay ranges for your area and job. This will provide the best insight in helping you determine what basic pay you may be looking at.
Review Linked In, set-up a free account, search and review companies and job titles that hire for the job you are interested, and IM directly with employees and managers to gain additional insight.

I dont see any robots yet fixing lines between houses. So I would stay you will still be in-demand in the upcoming years.
Can you speak more to the pay around linemen? I think that would better address the students questions and make your answer more helpful
