Bruce’s Answer

Hi Braydon - The Internet and businesses and organizations around the world rely on databases to store (and retrieve) all kinds of information.

Somebody has to design, install, test, upgrade, maintain, monitor, expand, back up, restore, repair, tune, and secure these systems.

Database Administrators do all that.

And the demand is very high for DBAs because the Internet and all businesses use computer database systems, and in particular the Internet just keeps growing and growing globally.

When I got into computer programming, I enjoyed it, but I also knew it would pay fairly well, and jobs would always be available through my life and wherever I live.

Hope that helps. Good luck to you!

Kelly’s Answer

Hey Braydon,

Just to add a bit more color to the other responses you've received, one of the reasons this role might be open is due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite some sectors struggling during this period, industries like healthcare, aviation, and hospitality still needed someone to handle their digital security needs.

Now, for large companies that already have teams to handle installation and troubleshooting, the job often involves a mix of onsite and remote work. This is especially true for independent contractors who may need to visit several locations, a requirement that might not sit well with those who've gotten used to working from home during the pandemic.

But if you're someone who enjoys working in an onsite or hybrid environment, this could definitely open up more opportunities for you.

AJAY’s Answer

DBAs(Database Administrators) have always been key players in the Tech World starting with the 90s when Oracle's flagship RDBMS(Relational Database Management System) became popular. The World of databases has evolved since with noSQL databases and Big Data platform like Hadoop. The reason is the explosion of data in the past 10 years. The amount of user data generated since 2010 is more than the what was generated in the entire history of mankind before 2010. And it continues to grow exponentially with IOT(Internet Of Things aka Smart/Connected devices). Today almost every hardware device is wifi enabled and online. This has moved the center of gravity in the Tech World from applications to Data. And to deal and manage all this data companies are hiring people specializing in Data : Data Scientist, Data Analyst, Data Engineer.

Indira’s Answer

Databases are organized collection of information of any kind. Eg, address books, medical records, student information etc. And database administrators are maintainers of that data. The need to store information/data is growing on a daily basis. There is more and more data generated everyday. Database administrators ensure databases run efficiently. They make sure that data is available to users and secure from unauthorized access i.e someone who should not be having access to that information is kept out of it . As the amount of data increases the need for someone to maintain that data also goes up.
