Ken’s Answer

Hi Abbie!

Wow. Talk about an easy question with a very difficult and complicated answer.

The answer is complicated by having many factors beyond just money. We just went through this with our daughter. Two of the major factors we discovered were:
- if you become involved in off campus housing you become obligated for at least a one year lease with a hefty security deposit. If you live on campus, you are only paying for the use of the room during the school terms - not for the rest of the year when you are not there.
- another major factor was the lack of security. If you are on campus, you are protected by the campus security, which is a great asset.

There are many other factors regarding food and maintenance expenses, etc. which are better covered in a few sites that speak better than I:

http://collegeparents.org/2010/03/14/should-my-college-student-live-campus/

The decision is definitely an individual one. One has to consider all aspects and your own situation.

You are embarking on a remarkable journey. There is a large transition between high school and college.

Best of luck! Please keep me posted. I would like to follow your progress!!

Michael’s Answer

For me I found that it was. I lived off campus and had a dinning pass so when I was on campus I could eat at the dinning hall. I would look at what your room and board is for on campus and then do some research on what some different apartments/townhouses would be. Hope that this helps!

Hilda’s Answer

While it is typically cheaper to live off campus I would recommend living on campus as the preferred way to become immersed in student life, make friends and otherwise make the most of the college experience.
