I guess you mean what classes do you take? The initial route for both 2D and 3D is the same, you have to be an artist first, so you need to be enrolled in a program that submerses you in art the first year (drawing, painting, photography, film, art/film/animation history). In that program you may also have a basic animation class. After that it becomes more specific, 2D animation and motion graphics and CG character animation. There are many schools that have these programs. Alternatliy if you want to do CG animation there are two online schools, iAnimate and Animation Mentor. Studios hire students who have completed AM, like ReelFX which is in Tx (Austin I think). They run about $2.5K a class and you have to take 6 classes to finish the program.

You need to have lots of money honestly, lots of passion and you should try hard. but in detail it depends on what kind of animation you want to learn and which style you will choose. Robert has it right. We master the fine arts first. Then we get stuck in the computers for 3D. Computers are used for 2D as well though.

Robert’s Answer

If you are interested in 3D Animation on the college level, you will begin with basic courses in Digital Imaging (Photoshop or similar software) and 3D Animation software such as Maya, 3DS Max, Lightwave or Cinema 3D. Maya is probably the most popular software in the field now since it can run on a variety of operating system and its tools are robust. You will also probably be expected to take a Basic Drawing course or Art Appreciation. There will also be a few "Core" courses, such as English composition, Algebra, etc.
