I aspire to be a lawyer. In my undergrad year, What major would best equip me for law school?

I want to eventually become a judge. When I was researching several law schools, I came across a survey and it said that most people who major in Pre-law aren't prepared for law school and are less likely to get admitted into one. #law #government #judiciary

I absolutely agree with Doug’s advice- study courses that interest you. My only suggestion would be to take classes that require more reading and writing. My major was political science; and that is a typical major. However, some of the most sought after law school graduates have undergraduate degrees in a technical field I.e. engineering, Biology, chemistry etc. The reason is due to the highly lucrative patent law industry. If you can, double major, or have a major in some sort of engineering with a minor in political science, philosophy, or history I think that would be advantageous. Just make sure you enjoy reading and writing because you will do that- a lot- in law school. I hope that helps.

Doug’s Answer

The area of law covers most all aspects of society: government; corporations; politics and even specialties like patents which is highly technical. If you research corporate CEO's you see a high percentage have law school training

With that said I would say go with your strong interests. If you like science do that. If you like history do that. I never found a major that did not have relevancy in law. Pre law is great but not essential

Thank you comment icon The most I can think of as a general major is political science. There may be courses that discuss law. Economics, business or finance might not be bad but they're less directly related. Leah
