There are many jobs related to criminology that do not require you to become a police officer! For instance, there is a job called a forensics analyst where they do the detective work around crimes but they themselves are not a cop. I would say just research more into what law agencies offer certain positions! Good luck!

Hi Tatiyana!
Most agencies select their detectives from their pool of existing police officers. In fact, many agencies require police officers to serve an average of five to seven years before becoming eligible for detective positions. This allows you to receive real-life field experience. In addition, potential police detectives are expected to pass exams, etc. However, detective requirements do depend on jurisdiction.
Hope this helps!

If you don't want to be a police officer beforehand and work your way up then maybe you want to consider a similar career. There are forensic positions that do not require you to be a police officer first. There are cybersecurity careers as well. The closest to a homicide detective might be a private investigator. I was told in college that those with a police or military background tend to have more success as private investigators in terms of working with law enforcement in some circumstances and working criminal cases. Private investigators do all sorts of things though and so it's worth looking into. Hope this helps!
