Daniela’s Answer

Hi Jonah,

Popular places for economics internships

Federal Reserve - The Federal Reserve is the central banking system of the United States. The role of economists in this organization is to study the economy and see how it relates to the banking system. The two most popular internships in the Federal Reserve are in the Economic Research Divisions and in Information Technology.

Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) - The BEA is a government organization that gathers data about the US economy, including its gross and domestic product. This aim of the bureau is to provide a place people can go to find the most accurate and up-to-date economic information.

Mathematica Policy Research - Mathematica Policy Research is a firm that offers research and evaluation services to policy makers and program managers in subjects such as disability, early childhood, education, health, labor and many other important issues.

Brookings Institute - The Brookings Institute is a think tank which studies economics and governance. The major research focuses of those are on US foreign policy and the global economy and development.

Another area to explore would be Management Consulting, which applies a range of backgrounds to help our clients face their toughest challenges. Some organizations to explore include Deloitte, Boston Consulting Group, Bain, McKinsey, among many others.

If you are strong in math you might also want to check out the actuarial profession. Actuaries evaluate risk, often in the context of insurance (like life insurance, car insurance, medical insurance,etc.). It is applied mathematics much like economics. You can check out more about it at BeAn Actuary.com. beanactuary

Hi Jonah, you got some great answers already but one more field that offers some interesting internship opportunities, above all if you are interested in data and field work, is development research. There are several survey firms/non-profits (e.g. Busara Center for Behavioral Economics, Innovations for Poverty Action) that hire interns on a regular basis as well as bi- and multi-lateral development organization (e.g. most of the United Nations Organizations). Just a personal example: as a recently graduated economist, I started my career with an internship at FAO (United Nations). Good luck with your search for an internship!

Kevin’s Answer

Another option for you would be to consider a commercial credit underwriting position with a bank. There are lots of banks that employ these positions and your economics degree will qualify you for employment in this area. Most of your time would be spent analyzying different companies and supporting the loan structure for these companies. Eventually commercial credit underwriters become commercial loan officers which provides for more customer interaction.

Depends on what career path you would like to go down. Just search "internship" "economics" on Linkedin and you will see plenty of firms. For non-profits and think tanks, may need to apply at each institution's website individually.
