Dina’s Answer

Hi Julz, students can gain from working while studying. I see that you are a graphic designer or in the tech industry, so you may get a freelance job or part time job, even an internship that will add experience to your profile. However, most of the students think that they will be distracted from their studies while working. It will take from you more effort to hold down the job and make good grades but everything is possible. you only have to organize your time, prioritize your assignments, create blocks of study time, schedule your daily activities and be flexible !

Jim’s Answer

Yes, indeed you can! A few suggestions:
1. Talk with your instructor -- they might be a great resource for you for part-time job opportunities, and they will be familiar with the level of experience you currently have. That's important, as you don't want to oversell yourself on your level of experience while you are still learning.
2. Read Job Postings online --that will give you an idea of what company's are looking for in a graphic design candidate. If there are areas that you are not familiar with on a job posting, perhaps speak with your instructor and ask for advice on how you can learn more about those areas.
3. Also -- Talk to people who work in the graphic design field. They will be another great resource as they all started out someplace, and could offer helpful tips on how to market your talents to an employer and also balance school and work.

I hope this helps! All the best!

Sandra’s Answer

Great question! The answer for ME was yes. I was a Computer Science major and decided to take a job at school to not only pay for food, etc. but also to gain some experience in the job. Some jobs require more effort than others, which as mentioned above, can take away from your main goal of studying and getting good grades. So I agree being organized and prioritizing will be the best. I was able to get a job in the help desk, so that allowed to get experience in the field I was studying but also flexibility (right on campus, etc.). Other times I took jobs that were not related to my field, but still gave me the opportunity to work on my organization skills, being responsible, etc. So it all depends on what you want to get out of it. But it is definitely possible and a good life opportunity if you have the time and passion for it.

You may also want to look at freelance work on places like upwork and others, if your time is more limited.

Good luck!

Simeon’s Answer

Yes, lots of people get jobs, especially part-time ones, while they're still in school. I had part-time jobs throughout my entire time at both undergraduate and graduate school. I did mostly work-study work since it allowed me to be on campus and usually came with a great perk like free food or some study time.

I would like to add to Diana and Sandra's answer: ask your educational institution of they provide co-op opportunities for your major / degree. If they do not, look for internship opportunities during your semester , not just during the summer. This is another way of gaining experience before you graduate. Experience is very important, so make sure you can get some before earning your degree.

In my situation, I applied to a six month internship at a prestigious company which extended from the summer through my fall semester. My university offered a co-op program but not with that company. I worked with my university to add that company to their co-op program and took a semester off working and gaining very valuable experience. In my case, it delayed my graduation by a semester, but now I had a full resume with relevant experience in my major.
