Rebecca’s Answer

You have plenty of options with these subjects in tertiary. For Commerce, you can consider to continue to study on Business, Accounting, Finance, Statistics, etc. For Science, you can continue to study on Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Engineering, etc.
The most important is what you are interested in and what you plan to do in the future. I suggest you can do more research on the future career you would like to be. Hence, you can decide the subjects that it closest to the career you are interested on.
Having said that, it is not a must to work on the industry you chose now after finishing your tertiary education except on those professions, e..g Medical, Legal, etc.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Sana’s Answer

A more important question to think about what subjects spark your interest. And additionally what do you see yourself doing in the future.

The options you are setting out are quite broad which gives the impression that you have not taken a deep dive into what either of these offer. That said, should you take either of the subjects, your career paths may in turn be very different as you get more exposure to the field. I have a lot of friends that studied engineering (mechanical / electrical) and are now in finance / data science.

A good starting point would be to assess you strengths and assess the subjects that excite you and interest you, I was personally a higher scorer in my grade 10 exams across all subjects and chose commerce in the end as business and economics interested me more. But at the time I wasn't sure where these subjects would take me.

Vijayalakshmi’s Answer

Hi!! Choosing commerce stream gives you the following options :
1. Doing a graduation course like B.com or B.com honours.
2. Commerce stream contains relevant subjects to pursue chartered accountancy course (C.A), company secretary ship course (ACS) or cost accounting (ICWAI).
3. A student of commerce can also pursue law course.
4. BBA can also be undertaken and subsequently MBA can be pursued.
5. Preparation for civil services --IAS and so on can also be undertaken.
6. Research/ Teaching.

Commerce stream comes with a variety of combinations of subjects -- commerce, economics, accounts, maths , business studies and so on apart from English, Hindi and other languages. The student can choose the options as per his/her further college plans. Hence in actuality, the student will benefit if he/she starts to plan for college education and accordingly choose the relevant subjects in class 11. This should be the ideal path.

Choosing science stream will have the following options:
1. B.E/ B.Tech M.tech/ Architecture-- engineering course
2. B.Sc-- Msc.
3. MBBS /PG
4.Chartered Accountancy
5. Law
6. Scientific research/ teaching.
Like commerce stream , science course also has a wide variety of options to choose, this depends upon our interests and willingness to pursue a particular course. Many science also opt for commerce based courses like law, CA and so on although they may need to do a little more of reading than their commerce counterparts since they are new to the subjects. Yet with commitment they can excel in commerce stream as well.

These are just some common options, there are many many more which can be explored based on your interests and commitment to hard work.
I suggest that you have alternative plans-- for example, plan A- C.A., if not plan B-- B.Com and MBA and so on. Think of where each plan will lead you, for example, CA is absolute hard work, yet the career is worthy. A B.com degree is very good if got from a reputed college and so on.

Vijayalakshmi recommends the following next steps:

1. List you interests
2. Look into the cost of the various courses and decide which fits your budget.
3. Research on the best schools / colleges in your area.
4. Study the various optional subjects available and weigh the alternatives carefully.
5. Try to map out a plan of career and you will be able to choose your course.
