Hi Rachel,

Data Science is such a fascinating area right now. Data is being collected and manipulated in new and unprecedented ways and new use cases are opening up all the time. As you are likely aware, ultimately the role of a data scientist is to take complex raw data and then convert it into patterns that can be actionable. The opportunities for data scientists are growing all the time. More data is being collected than ever before in new and innovative ways. Virtually every industry is or will be benefitted buy data science. I'll give a couple of examples that I have seen in my industry.

Consumer interest - A project that my team worked on recently included digital advertisement in retail where a digital display was set up and advertisements were shown. The device was able to recognize viewers based on proximity of their cell phones and calculate how long they viewed the screen and what ads they watched. The company was then able to (in some cases with opt in rules etc.) offer personalized coupons texted directly to their phones while they were still in the store encourage buying behavior. This project was heavily supported by data scientists.

SCADA - My team has worked on SCADA applications for large municipal utilities where hundred/thousands of sensors relay readings remotely back to a central HQ where the data was compiled by data scientists to monitor for variances to indicate potential failure in the system before they became a problem. Technicians were automatically deployed to service the equipment identified as problematic by the algorithm,

Law Enforcement - I also know of a project for law enforcement where security cameras were able to scam large crowns with facial recognition software. The facial recognition software was able to tie into profile data on outstanding warrants and criminal history. The relevant information was then able to be relayed to law enforcement personnel who were able to monitor or apprehend those in question. Again data scientists were able to make this happen.

Pretty cool eh?

Hi Rachel,

I think that if you get a degree in Data Science you will get a lot of opportunities to work on many different fields and industries, as the governance and management of huge amounts of data is huge now and will continue growing.

You will be successful on this field if you really like to program in different languages like Java, Python and SQL for data bases.

Hi Rachel,

One of the upcoming areas I am seeing for data science majors is in reporting. Almost every field needs reporting to track metrics, predict outcomes, and monitor data. Data science will provide you with the knowledge for defining, creating, and modifying reports. Creating and managing reports for a team or organization can be one of your many tasks or it can be a full-time job at large organizations.

In marine biology there would be many needs for reports. This is an informative website on the use of data science in the marine biology field:

Data Science applies to every field. You can work in any industry if you are a data scientist. You literally open up a world of opportunities with this field. Since you have another major in marine biology, it seems like you can apply your data science skills to that field!
