Hi Paul! Is great to hear you are considering to start your own business which is great as you will have flexibility to decide which type of cars, clients and services you will provide. However, be aware that starting a business involves on the long run, generate enough income in order to offset costs and generate profits. Therefore, I would advise you to first brainstorm how you visualize your business, where you want to get (small or big) and how you are going to do it (consider the funding needed to start the business).

Do not be discouraged if you don’t get right away the answers, on the contrary, have fun and as you develop this plan, you will realize if this is really what you want or you may consider other options, before you start your business. For example, after finishing school, you could start working in the automotive industry first, to learn and practice the career of an automotive mechanics, and in the future, with more experience and understanding of how the business works, you would have more clarity regarding if you should start your own business or work in a big company or associate with a friend. Best of luck in your journey!

Alan’s Answer

The question is really - should you start your own business or work for someone else.
If you are an entrepreneurial kind of person and willing to put in the time to learn all the facets of the business than it can be very rewarding, but a huge amount of effort up front as you will be doing everything.
Some questions to consider:
Do you like the business side?
Accounting & taxes?
Talking to people?
Managing people?
Setting schedules?
Promotion & marketing
Hiring and firing?

Depending on the answers to the above (and more) you may want to work for someone else and hone your craft under their tutelage. Learn what works and what doesn't. Focus in on a certain aspect. Maybe you really just building engines? That's cool. It's up to you and there are lots of different ways of being in the industry.

Good luck.
