Your work is most enjoyable when you select a career or field that interests you the most. Find something that you enjoy but always look for opportunities that will challenge you and expand your knowledge base. In my personal experience I've been asked to work on jobs that I had no personal experience with, but in retrospect I believe these positions allowed me to enhance my least used skills to the best of my experience. Don't be afraid to go outside your comfort zone.

First and foremost find what you are interested in! Once you've got a decent idea of what your are interested in start looking into internship opportunities with different companies in that field. That will give you a good idea if you really like that field or not. Starting now will give you the time you need to really whittle down what you want to do. As I said though make sure it is something that you are interested in, because that makes going to work everyday enjoyable and not just a chore.

Hi Emma!
You are asking a very important question! The goal in life is to get into a career where you will look forward to going to work every day and feel a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. Looking for an appropriate career is like buying a pair of shoes. They may look great, but you need to try them on and walk in them for a while to determine proper fit and comfort.
The first thing that you need to do is to get to know yourself better. Here are some helpful tips:

When you find some career areas that appear to be of interest, it is good to do some career exploration (It is time for shoe shopping.).:
Here some ways to accomplish that:
- talk to your school counselor about participating in coop, intern, shadowing, and volunteer programs that will allow you to see the inside of career areas to see what people actually do, how they got there, and how you feel about that.
- talk to the head of alumni relations at your school to arrange to meet and talk to graduates of your school who are working in your career areas of interest so that you can visit them at their place of employment and learn from them
- talk to the reference librarian at your local library to locate and attend meetings of professional organizations that represent your career areas of interest so that you can mix and mingle and learn more. These organizations welcome student inquiries and participation.
Best of luck! Please keep me posted. I would like to follow your progress!
