The personal statements you see on their websites are to help you identify with a psychologist's specialties and who they are as a person. This helps the client to find someone who aligns with their preferred method of therapy and diagnosis, as well as find a good fit. In therapy it is important to have a trusting relationship with your psychologist.

Hello, Beth.
If you're talking about when you apply to become a psychology student, it's to get to know you and to see your unique take on psychology. Stand out by being you, but also state that you are willing to do the work (in your own words).
If you're talking about when you're in a session with a psychologist and they are using personal examples, it's to be relatable and to create common ground with the client.
The best thing to remember about either applying for colleges or working with a psychologist is to be you. Not the version of you you want to show, but the real, flawed, bright, happy, hardworking, optimistic, questioning, unsure....you! Be you when you meet anyone. Be you when you speak. Be you when you think. Being you is unique, and that's what allows teachers, students, and your future clients to be themselves. As soon as you are you, you are really you, then others can drop their masks and be really them....everyone becomes more real, open, and vulnerable.
And that's where the healing begins.
