Hello Beth,
This is an excellent question, and I'm glad you are taking into consideration what skills a psychology major may acquire. Here are the top 5 skills I have personally acquired, and how they have helped me both professionally and personally:
1. Empathy: many psychology majors move into helping roles or professions. In these capacities, having empathy is crucial so we can successfully connect with and help others.
2. Self-Awareness: psychology students have a unique opportunity to learn more about themselves in contrast to students studying other majors. Becoming self-aware can help you be a better person and professional. This skill has helped me be more in-tune with my values, biases, triggers, and overall perception of the world.
3. Communication: being able to effectively communicate with others is a skill I have attributed heavily to studying psychology. Psychology majors learn how to communicate with all different types of people, because we all think differently and experience the world differently.
4. Critical Thinking , Writing & Research: On an academic level, psychology majors are expected to read, write, and think critically and abstractly about many topics. Because psychology majors often perform research, a very important skill you will learn is how to effectively conduct research and use statistics to analyze data and trends.
5. Problem Solving: psychology majors learn how to solve problems quickly and effectively! We also develop a unique ability to consider all scenarios, situations, and factors when solving a problem. In a professional environment, our training in personality development also helps us solve problems in team-environments because we can easily adjust our style to meet the needs of the group.
Psychology is applicable and helpful for almost any career because we understand people and behavior on a deeper level. I hope this helps with your decision to major in psychology. Best of luck to you.
