Branches of Psychology

Hello! I am a junior in high school who is planning to major in psychology in college. I was wondering which specific job would fit me best. I enjoy working with people one on one, and I’m not a fan of a large group atmosphere. I enjoy helping people, and being a support system for them. Also, I love analyzing behavior and figuring out where it stems from. Which branch of psychology would allow me to use these passions best? #jobs #psychology #clinicalpsychology #behavioralpsychology

Dr. Philip K HUI’s Answer

Hi, Emma,

It is a good choice for a Psychology major if your career objective is to be a Clinical Psychologist or therapist who always works with people one on one. Positive Psychology is one of the popular branches. And there are post-graduate programs offered by many top universities.

First of all, read some books in Psychology, such as Character Strengths and Virtues, Authentic Happiness and Flourish written by Prof. Martin E. Seligman. Further, you can take his positive psychology course by Prof. Seligman through Coursera.

Just run straight to your goal!

Tosha’s Answer

There are lots of different types of clinical work that doesn't require large groups. As you work through college you may become more comfortable in groups since you will probably take at least one public speaking class.
