Dr. Ray’s Answer

Dear Yajaira,

Your question is an excellent one. First, not every client you meet will have the type of problems that cause distress in others. However if you deal very much with depressed clients, those suffering from post traumatic stress or those in unhappy situations, you may feel distressed at times.

One thing that helps me in these situations is to remember that I can help my clients feel better. That is why they are there and that is what I am trained to do, so I see these situations as full of hope. Also it helps to have a fulfilling personal life away from work, with opportunities to relax, have fun and recharge your emotional batteries. For better or worse most people who deal with human suffering become somewhat desensitized to it. This can lead to their being callous but it is probably a necessary and helpful adaptation.

I have known a few people who got out of these professions because the suffering of their clients got to them but most people learn to cope with these feelings. I certainly hope you will not let this discourage you from pursuing a career in this area.

I hope this is helpful. Good luck in pursuing your career!
