Is UW Madison a good college to attend if I want to be an engineer?

They have very high engineering ranks but I don't know exactly what goes into the ranking #engineering #mechanical-engineering #civil-engineering #computer-engineering #software-engineering #industrial-engineering #social-services

Matt,

Great school and a really fun City to live in. I am bias as I grew up in Milwaukee and have family living in Madison. I also went to UW-Platteville for Civil Engineering which is fairly close by but certainly would have loved to attend UW if I had the chance. I suggest finding a way to visit and experience it as well as other Universities and hopefully it will just hit you and you will know which one to go to. I dont know how the rankings work but I know they always rank high in the Midwest along with Purdue and Illinois.

Good luck!

While I studied accounting at Madison, I can speak directly to Madison as a school and indirectly through the engineering program through my engineering friends.

Madison is a beautiful school with top programs in both academia and research. The great thing about Madison is the many opportunities to get involved, whether that be in performing research with a virtual 3d environment at the Wisconsin Institute of Discovery, discussing policy in the Alexander Hamilton Society club, or working in one of many labs.

My engineering friends learned a lot in their classes, received internships and jobs, and were both qualified when they graduated as well as were able to branch out and take advantage of the many opportunities to build both hard and soft skills during their time at Madison.

As you said, the programs are ranked high, and it is a great option to consider to pursue a degree.

I suggest you go on some of the department specific pages and see some course syllabuses to see what you would be learning and whatof outside the classroom opportunities there are to see if anything catches your eye!
