Those departments with high pay and lucrative benefits have a LOT of applicants. Everyone wants to work for them. In watching co-workers apply with "THE" SAPD (San Antonio), almost all were rejected the first go around. It seemed to be a test, if they really wanted it, they went back a second time, and usually got selected.

As an officer, you have to be resilient. Use that first interview to find your weaknesses. If you don't know what they are, ASK them. When they get to the part of asking you if you have any questions, ask "Do any of you have any reservations about hiring me, if so, what are they, and what can I do to improve?" Take that advice to heart, and go back a second time, and show that you worked to overcome those weaknesses.

As a female, I know I was asked questions the male officers were not. It was many years ago, and hopefully that has changed. Also as a female, you have an advantage. Departments need more women officers. That makes it easier. Don't assume this means you will get the job. Study hard for the review board. You want them to truly want you, not to reluctantly offer you the job just because you are a woman.

Good luck!

No matter the endeavor, some people have to fail their first time. It's OK to put yourself out there and have to try again.

Just always be mindful of whether the things that you're struggling for are what you really want.
