Working as a summer intern in a law office is a great experience if you can do it. You can also look for opportunities in local courts, clerk's offices and prosecutor or public defender's offices. You may also want to consider social services and nonprofit organizations such as immigration services, juvenile justice or domestic violence assistance programs. Finally, if you are interested in civil issues, you can look for opportunities in small claims courts, look for landlord-tenant organizations or civil practice lawyers that may want interns.

When we review applications for law school we look for students who are well rounded. There are many organizations that use volunteers so think about the issues that interest you. We get several students who complete internships in law firms as well. Before I went to law school I interned at a public defender's office. There's not a lot of "legal" work you can do. I just took notes, but it was great experience.
