George’s Answer

Hello Cheyanne,

Udbhav Sharma gave you some very good advice, but in addition, I think it might help you to narrow down just what kind of detective you want to be. Are you looking to be a Private Investigator, a Police Detective or a Criminal Investigator? Do you want to work for a civilian firm such as an Insurance Company, local Police Department, Sheriff's Office, State Police or Federal Law Enforcement Agency? There are many different Law Enforcement Agencies with detectives or the equivalent. Many of these agencies will train you to be a detective and your college major may not be that important others look for people with certain skill sets like a law or accounting degree, various languages can also can help you get the job you want. I suggest that you decide what it is you are looking for and then contact that specific agency and others like it. They can give you more specific information regarding just what it is that they are looking for. I wish you great luck and all the best in your pursuits.

Udbhav’s Answer

Hello Cheyanne,

This is a very good question and a good career choice. There is no universal training path to becoming a private detective. Although many states, such as Maine, only require that candidates have a high school diploma or equivalent, other states require formal education in private investigation, criminal justice or related field. For example, Michigan requires applicants to have a bachelor’s or graduate degree in criminal justice, law, security management or computer forensics to qualify for a license. States like California, on the other hand, use academic training to determine one’s professional experience requirement: applicants with associate degrees in criminal justice or police science must complete 5,000 hours of practical experience while those with bachelor’s degrees need only 4,000 hours. Prospective private investigators should review their state licensing requirements before selecting a program to ensure it meets academic prerequisites.
