Hi Amyah,
In any area of law it can be difficult to put aside your previous biases to be completely fair, but it is necessary for the job. This doesn't mean you need to be harsh or cold, but it does mean that you need to know the law and keep it in the forefront of your mind. As a judge your main objective is determining who has the better argument in relation to the laws in question. This expertise will come with time, and through your career prior to being a judge you can work on these skills and being more observational.

Hi Amyah,
I am a workers' compensation insurance defense attorney. I work in what is considered to be administrative law. We have judges who know the law and listen to opposing attorney's arguments and make a legal determination or ruling. Therefore, I believe the first step is to really get to know the area of law you are practicing. You don't really have to be tough, you just have to be fair when applying the law and deciding whose arguments are stronger. Also, keep in mind, in workers' compensation, when a judge issues an order that order can be challenged. I recommend focusing on your GPA and studying for the LSAT. Time and life experience will help you obtain the characteristics needed to become a judge. Just be the best you can be and stay on the right track.
Best wishes,
Andrew
