Dana’s Answer

Hi there, great question! I have the experience of looking for internships all throughout my university years, here are some tips:

✔️ Try to learn in your free time. This includes learning new skills (for example a new programming language) or becoming more experienced with what you know already. You can do this by developing personal projects, reading books or watching online courses.

✔️ Create a good CV/resume. There are plenty of resources online on how to do this. My personal advice would be to include:
- your education (degree, with timestamps)
- your best soft skills in a short description or using bullet points (for example: great listener, excellent collaborator when it comes to working in teams etc.)
- your past experience. This includes summer jobs, part-time jobs (even if they are not related to software development, they were occasions in which you showed you are responsible) which short, good descriptions
- your personal projects (you can add projects you worked on during university as well, it s great if you worked in teams)
- courses you completed (they can be online, it's great if you have a certification, include the dates as well).
- volunteering and extracurricular activities

✔️ Create a Linkedin profile, complete it with the information from your CV (you can make it more detailed if you want)

✔️ On Linkedin, connect with HR recruiters and people you know, and look for jobs by using their search engine and by messaging recruiters that are seem interested.

✔️ Personally, when I applied to many internships, I used to have a Google Sheets table with the following columns:
Company | Applied date | Response | Interview stage date | Interview stage response | Accepted/Rejected
You can build something similar if it helps you stay more organized and not forget about companies!

✔️ I would say to not apply to positions where, for instance they are looking seniors developers. However, I would apply for Junior/Mid positions even if I do not meet all the requirements in the job description.

✔️ Prepare for interviews in advance! I wrote a full detailed response about how to prepare for interviews here on Carrer Village for another student's question: https://www.careervillage.org/questions/435218/i-want-interview-tips

There are a lot of great remote opportunities and companies. From every response, even if it is a rejection, you can learn something. Be patient and keep looking!
I hope this helped, don't hesitate to ask more questions :) Good luck!

Desiree’s Answer

For an internship in the U.S. you will need an appropriate visa.

Interns from other countries would typically use the J-1 Intern visa or the J-1 Trainee visa (see https://j1visa.state.gov/programs/intern or https://j1visa.state.gov/programs/trainee) . Review those requirements carefully - I believe the intern visa requires that you graduated from university no more than 1 year prior to the internship start date whereas the trainee visa requires 5 years of work experience first (and since you seemed to indicate that you've been working for 2 years, it's not clear that either would fit your current situation). There might be other options of which I am unaware, so do your own research!

Also, consider whether there are internship opportunities more locally and start there!

Good luck!

Desiree recommends the following next steps:

Research U.S. visa requirements for internships to understand if you qualify or what you will need to do to qualify.

Mickael’s Answer

I am going to concur with both answers above.
(1)If you are not a citizen of the country you wan to have an internship in, be aware that you need to check with the country's immigration policies to be able to work as an intern. With COVID-19 going on, it might even be harder.
(2) Another thing to consider is the language. Please make sure you speak the language of the country you want to have your internship good enough that you can sustain a discussion with colleagues. That may limit your searches.
(3) Think about the cost of living in the countries. I am from France originally (I now live in the USA) and my internship was paid the strict minimum. That's something that is common in France so be aware that companies may not be lavished about the compensations and you still need to cover the costs of your life in the country.
(4) Because you are a foreigner, the company can see this as higher risks and therefore will seek for the "perfect" candidate. As Dana said, you need to show more than local candidates.
(5) Good resume/CV: this is ultra important for this case because that's the first thing recruiters see about you. And since you're not local, it needs to be attractive. I will add to Dana's answer: make sure you get some examples from the countries you want to apply in. All countries have different cultures and do not seek for exactly the same information as others. I can tell that US and French resume formats are not the same (plus they are not called the same) (resume in English, Curriculum Vitae in French - shorten to CV). A general format is:
- your civil information like Name, e-mail, address, phone number, possibly country of origin and other details that vary from countries to countries (for example some will ask you date of birth, others may find it taboo)
- your education
- your projects and professional experience
- your extra scholar activities
- your languages you can read and/or write (and understand enough)

More specifically, Dell Technology proposes internship programs to student all over the world. Before the pandemic, there was proposal to help the candidate live in the U.S. with the proper visa. We usually have internship program from June to August. The period we interview candidates is between October and March before the internship. Check the link here for more information: https://jobs.dell.com/students
If you do apply, make sure your resume includes:
- your civil information (name, e-mail, phone, address).
- a quick single sentence about your goals.
- your school and grades.
- your relevant courses (please do not list courses that you took but have almost no experience in).
- your professional experience.
- your school projects (most relevant).
- your volunteering and extracurricular activities.
I hope that helps.
Thank you comment icon Thank you Mickael, will checkout dell programme. Prajwal
Thank you comment icon Also very important: make sure there are no spelling mistakes when you send something. While they are accepted when we communicate informally, they tend to be disqualifying when the discussion becomes more formal. I believe, in English, you should spell `program` not `programme` Also, all proper nouns have there first letter capitalized so you should have written Dell, not dell. In your resume and letter this is crucial :) Mickael Rosenberg

I just finished a program with Catalyte.io. They'll give you a free 6 month self-paced online Full-Stack training, then guarantee you a salary for 2 years as they place you on various in-house or client teams. Their vision is to identify people from any and all backgrounds to become software developers. I finished my training last October, and am now working in a big data team at Charter Communications in Denver, Colorado. I'd highly recommend it!
Thank you comment icon Hello Sean , thank you ..will checkout the training program :) Prajwal
Thank you comment icon looks like catalyte does not support for foreigners. Prajwal
