I was an extemporaneous speaker but I had a very dry style. The champions could emote on stage and get people to buy into them emotionally. That’s is what won.

First you need to research and learn about the issue you are debating over. Know both sides of the arguments for better preparation, Practice your speeches in a mirror prior to using them. The more you practice the better your presentation will be received. Get used to public speaking. For some public speaking is easy, for others it is difficult. You must have confidence in your speaking abilities. Present from a position of strength, this will come from your research and presentation practice. Be direct and fact based in your arguments. Get confident in your abilities so your presentation comes across as being from a confident and knowledgeable source.
The more you do it the better you will become. Public speaking and debate are great skills for later in life and attaining jobs
Good luck

In my defense, to be an effective debater you need to be very well versed with the topic you will debate about. So the first skill is to sharpen up your knowledge, you study. Another thing is, be an execellent communicator, your knowledge about the topic will be of no use when you cannot articulate them. You can also look up(watch videos) to people or debaters who are really good at what they are doing. So equipped your self and battle up.
