What are some techniques/advice I can use to promote myself even more during a job interview?

I have just landed a job interview for a position as a secretary, but I lack the past office job experiences that they prefer. In the past, I have mainly worked as a camp counselor as well as volunteered at a couple of shelters. Are there any techniques or just advice that can help me make myself a more desirable candidate with these limited experiences of mine?

First thing I notice is that you DO have an interview even though you state that you don't have the office experience they are seeking...so...either the Hiring Manager is having issues getting good candidates(something to explore in the interview) or they see something about you that makes them think you could be successful in the role...

Try this technique -
Challenge - topic of a time that you faced a challenge or were responsible for something that was challenging
Action - what steps did you take to resolve the challenge? Did you enlist others? Did you develop an innovation solution?
Result - What happened as a result of your actions? think of a process you improved or developed that saved time, money or made
the situation better for customers and/or employees

Hiring Managers want to hire people who CARE and CAN SOLVE PROBLEMS...particularly for this type of role...

Good Luck ! Smile and show sincere interest in how you can help their team !

Hi Esther:
Question:Promoting yourself during the interview:
1. The preparation for getting yourself in the right frame of mind for this interview starts when you are at home. Going over many of the question that might be asked is important and feeling like you have a good answer for these questions. Have someone help you and give you feedback. Make sure you do your research on-line for this company that you will interview with. The more you know about the company, the more insight you have to answer the questions to their liking.
2. Now that you have done your research for question and answers and research company you can get your self ready and set the right tone for the interview. 4 crucial points for going into an interview: dressing for success, (proper clothing, make-up and eye contact, also a good hand shake) ,is important because that is who they see. outwardly; importance of body language; look at whoever is asking the question, don't fiddle with you hair or put hands on your face and swing your legs, this means that you are nervous and that goes against you; Body language can also mean the way you answer (if they ask a hard question and you make a face then they know they have you with nervousness. The best thing to do is answer all questions truthfully, give a precise answer to their question and give the impression that you have the upper hand in this interview and that you are qualified for the position. You are there to give them Your PROFESSIONAL IMAGE THAT WOULD FIT NICELY WITH THEIR COMPANY.
3. I hope you have a good resume: This is important that you have qualifications that fit into their job situation. If you don't have the proper office skill there are so many ways to get some of these like computer skills, office management classes they are often offered at night school or at a vocational school If you are lacking in this area and would like to be more knowledgeable I would look into taking some courses in this area and maybe look for a job while taking the classes and then you can put the classes that you are taking on your resume. This shows the company that you are trying to get more education. That is a good thing. Put every qualification and skill that you have on your resume. Maybe get a good resume book from the library that will help you put one together.
4. Interviews may be unstructured, which means that the interviewer asks more open-ended questions to get you into longer answers and to reveal more about yourself. The structured interview asks a prescribed set of questions to seek brief answers. Some will mix it up for you as the interview progresses. Try to determine which direction the interviewer is going, so that you can respond accordingly. This will make the interview easier and more comfortable and you will make a good impression. You may want to practice interviewing with a family member or a friend just to see how you would do. This is a good experiment before you go on the interview.
5. You probably know this but don't answer any question that is a personal. Age, marriage, children, etc. On-line you can find a list of what questions you don't need to answer if they are asked. I would be want you to be knowledgeable on this before you interview. Don't let a tough question throw you. Be truthful and cheerful with your answer. If it is about a past employer don't say anything negative about that person, but concentrate on your abilities that you can bring to the company.

  1. NOW THAT YOU HAVE THIS INFORMATION YOU CAN BE MORE COMFORTABLE GOING ON YOUR NEXT INTERVIEW. REMEMBER: RELAX, BE ENTHUSIASTIC, KNOW WHAT YOU WANT TO SAY AND RESEARCH THE COMPANY AND QUESTIONS.

MOTTO " BE TRUTHFUL TO YOURSELF AND OTHERS, AND YOUR LIGHT WILL SHINE THROUGH"
GOOD LUCK IN YOUR INTERVIEWING. FOLLOW THESE IDEAS AND YOU WILL FEEL MORE COMFORTABLE.
