Getting both education and experience in this area is critical to being successful. Do both at the same time and make your decision when you get closer. You dont need to decide on going for a higher education at this time so dont fret the decision. It will open doors for you but in hospitality, depending on your area of interest, sometimes connections and experience will get you farther. If you want to get into a leadership position, an MBA will serve you will to hone your business skills. A bachelor degree will be enough to get you a job but I highly recommended you attend job fairs, internships, volunteer work, anything that helps build your resume to compete. Some companies do offer assistance to employees if you do want to get your masters degree and by then you will have the experience to see where you want to go from there. You don't have to do it all at once. your likes and dislikes can change. Good Luck!

Doug’s Answer

The job demands of an event planner are varied; in fact, the best event planners have advanced skills that won't necessarily be contained to just one degree program.

For instance, I think it is vitally important that every event planner understand accounting principles and be able to present financial information in a manner in which business professionals are accustomed to seeing them. I also think it is crucial that event planners be great communicators in order to effectively tell the story of their events to a wide range of stakeholders verbally and written, directly and indirect.

With just those two examples in mind, does that mean the best degree is business administration, marketing, mass communications, public relations or something else? The answer is yes to all of these and more. Is that an ambiguous answer? Sure it is, but what I hope you're hearing me say is there isn't one single degree program that turns out all the event planners. Find the one that best fits you - keeping in mind that this may change from one school to the next - and enrich your experience by adding challenging electives.
