Keanna’s Answer

Hi Jaden,

I love that you have found your passion in computer building. IT has such a wide array of options to explore, it can be overwhelming trying to nail down where to start. First and foremost, I would recommend looking for local internships/part-time jobs in the industry. There are so many awesome resources online that help students find and apply for specialized internships. Many jobs, even entry-level, prefer candidates with some related experience. Getting your foot in the door from the ground up, earlier into your career will play into your favor down the line.

A few tips to help get your foot in the door? Create your own portfolio! Since you build computers, maybe write down your process in a story format and take pictures throughout to document the progress? I've found in my experience it is always better to show people your intelligence vs just telling them.

I hope this helps! Best of luck Jaden.

Surya’s Answer

Hey Jaden,

It's great to see that you are interested in building computers and technology. Technology is one of the booming industries in the last 3 decades. A lot of companies encourage interns and undergraduates for internships. Start off by creating a Linkedin profile and follow the people/ company's which fall under your interests. This will help us keep you updated with the current technologies and also give you the option to explore if there are any internships or opportunities that match with your interests.

All the very best!!!

Thanks,
Surya.

Rebecca’s Answer

I guess you would like to work in Information Technology (IT) industry. There are different streams in IT, e.g. Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Management Information System, Information Engineering, etc.
If you would like to build computers, it is more related to the Computer Engineering streams. You can do more research on the work of Computer Engineer or you can speak to someone who really work in the industry to determine whether it is what you are interested in. Also, you can explore any intern or part time job opportunities to acquire better understanding on this career.
Having said that, you can also find out more on other streams in IT. You may also find something interesting too.
When you have short list on the subjects you are interested in, the next step is to find out which college offering the relevant courses and their entry criteria.
Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Mickael’s Answer

Hi Jaden,

It seems that you are interesting in computer hardware. If you like it, there are many companies that offer various jobs around this. There are companies that assemble computers for customers like Dell or HP. There are also more specialized companies that build specific hardware like CPU (e.g. Intel) or GPU (e.g. nvidia or Intel) or hard drive ....
There are also the industry companies that build servers, storage ... that need people to assemble computers part for bigger product than just computer. As an example, at Dell EMC, we build servers, storage products so we need hardware engineers to assemble the hardware and sometimes write code for the drivers/firmware.

If you are into hardware, you can seek computer science schools that offer computer hardware classes. I would recommend that you also take coding course and if you like it, more advance ones so that you can work in all those low level stacks for those companies.

I hope it helps and do not hesitate to ask more questions if you need more precise answer.
