Rachel’s Answer

It all depends really on who you work for and how much experience you have. I have found that most salons start out at minimum wage plus tips with the possibility of commission after so long. Children's salons tend to pay a little more per hour because you're dealing with kids. I would be cautious with salons that offer you commission but only if you don't already have a clientele because if youre not working on clients you're not making money.

This is an amazing career where you can make a lot of money and be your own boss. The amount of money you make depends solely on you. I work two days a week and make about $50,000 a year, I have been in the industry for 14 years and self employed for 9 of those. I started in a commission salon where I trained under the owners for about 9 months making minimum wage plus tips before going to commission. It takes time and dedication to build and maintain a clientele and to hone your craft but it is a very rewarding career. I can never imagine myself doing anything else!

Amanda’s Answer

It would depend on the area where you would work. Generally you would want to start somewhere that would pay you an hourly rate plus tips. Then once you have built up a clientele it would be up to you to switch to commission based or become a booth renter. If you build a clientele quickly and can find a reasonable place to booth rent, I would go that route. That is where you will make more money.

I would definitely have to say is where you plan to eventually work. The higher end of demographics the better chances you have of making great money. Don't doubt yourself! Make a portfolio go to churches and wedding halls, post a lot of your work. The more exposure you have and the location of the salon is the very most important aspect of how much you will make
