Aashish’s Answer

Hi, Harini!

Given you are based in Bengaluru, in what are unprecedented testing times for Karnataka and India, I would strongly recommend spending time in socially productive activities where you can contribute meaningfully through an NGO. Any experience you get would be beneficial not only as a life experience, personally gratifying but also appreciated by future reviewers of your resume - whether for educational or employment purposes.

Of course, reaching out to law firms who could offer short term research internship assignments that give you a first hand view into the legal profession would be great too. Given most firms are still operating remote, one benefit of this unfortunate year is you could potentially expand your search beyond Bengaluru.

Best of luck!

Hi Harini,
It's great to be thinking ahead with a worth-while summer experience. A couple ideas: if you can find an internship in law, human rights or a related field that would be a great way to get more exposure and experience. Alternatively, if you could afford to do this and work it into your schedule, volunteer work in law, a court house, a human rights organization or a nonprofit that focuses on legal support for causes that you're passionate about -- that may be a good fit for you. (You could do an online search for relevant nonprofit organizations near you. There is a site called volunteeringwithIndia.org that you could start with, if looking for an India-based organization). One other idea is to explore courses or summer programs (perhaps at a community college) that may provide exposure to one of these fields.

DENNIS’s Answer

Hi Harini: Go out and have fun! You will only be young once so go out and have fun! After that, try to get a job at the Courthouse or in a lawyer's office for the summer. Try to find a lawyer who will let you learn and experience things. I took some of our summer kids to Court so they could see why they were doing what they were doing for the summer. So have fun and learn!

Katherine’s Answer

See if you could take a job at a law office. Internship or even job shadow is a great way to get more of a view into what it looks like to be in that space. Diversify your experiences on your resume. Get experience in the court system by looking at opportunities at your local court house.
