What can you do with a degree in political science?

I'm thinking about this major but I'm not sure it's practical. Many politicians are lawyers, so that seems like that's the degree to get if you want to be in politics. And for academic study it seems like having a degree public policy is better (or law).

Political science and public policy tend to overlap in terms of classes, and you can have a pre-law track while majoring in either. You are right most people in office have studied the law. If that is something you are passionate about then you would want to try a pre-law track to prepare for Law School.

It really depends on your focus. For example, I studied PoliSci and also received a Masters in Public Policy, but my concentration was on educational equity and with that I worked at nonprofit and education companies, as well as researched policies around education. Now I'm currently in a different field, but my degrees still helped me get here. I think it's the skills you learn from such degrees (how and what to research, what information is most important, etc.) that help you succeed in your desired career.

Political science courses are relatively easy. They also were fun and interesting to me. There is little market for BA in political science. You can take masters and PHD level courses and teach or try to get job in think tank. Make good grades in college and good law boards and go to law school if law intetests you.
