In the United States, the certification process to become a pilot doesn't require a specific number of years (though to fly as an airline pilot generally requires a college degree), but instead a certain number of hours of flight time. Specifically, you start by earning your private pilot certificate, which generally takes 40-70 hours of flight time (while some people do this on an accelerated timeframe, it usually takes 3-6 months). You then proceed to earn your commercial certificate above 250 hours of flight time. From there, the most common pathway to reaching 1500 hours (since most people don't want to independently pay the tens of thousands that it would cost to do so personally) is to become a Certificated Flight Instructor, and to teach students.

Hi Nosisa,

It takes 3 months to become a pilot and earn your private pilot license. To become an airline pilot, it takes just over two years to gain the required 1,500 hours flight time. maybe you want to check this website for more info:

Diane’s Answer

There is no defined number of years to become a pilot or an airline pilot. A person can study aviation in college, or, like myself, self-study and take flight lessons at the local airport. Generally, part 141 schools are more respected than flight training from a local FBO.
If you attend a university, plan on four years of education. As far as flight time, it is possible to obtain a Restricted ATP that allows you to fly for an airline with as few as 1,000 flight hours if you meet specific criteria, such as having a bachelors with an aviation major from a recognized institution.
Now is a great time to become an airline pilot.
